Soundtracking

Animat have developed a unique approach to live performance which involves creating new soundtracks to some of our favourite films, using a mixture of original material and tracks from our eclectic DJ archive.

Releases

Sundaze Synerma (2002-2005)
As members of the Sundaze collective we worked together with vocalist Anne Garner and DJ Unity Dub to create live soundtracks to Luc Besson's Subway and Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which we performed at festivals throughout the UK and Europe.

Belleville Rendezvous (2006-2007)

Aka Les Triplettes de Belleville, Sylvian Chomet's extraordinary animation was nominated for two academy awards and won the BBC 4 World Cinema Award in 2004 as well as many other prizes and accolades. In collaboration with Ed Carter – Winter North Atlantic – we produced a live soundtrack which we performed at the Big Chill, Leeds Film Festival and Elefest (London), followed by a sellout tour of UK cinemas in spring 2007.

The Straight Story (2007-2008)

The ultimate chilled road movie, the Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated The Straight Story tells the tale of one man and his lawnmower and their epic journey across America’s mid-west.

With the express approval of director David Lynch, Animat's soundtrack to the film was performed live using a mixture of our own original brand of dubby downtempo and an eclectic selection of tracks from our DJ archive and we worked with the Picturehouses chain to promote a series of screenings with music in cinemas across the UK in May and June 2008.

Tuvalu (2008-2009)

Set in a dilapidated swimming baths and fuelled by dreams of escape to a tropical paradise, German director Veit Helmer’s award-winning dark comedy Tuvalu (1999) is an inspired, quirky and stylish tale which sits somewhere in the tradition of Marc Caro's ‘Delicatessen’ and Kusturica's ‘Black Cat, White Cat’.

Despite winning numerous awards in Europe and the USA, the film has not been previously released in the UK and following a successful test run at the Big Chill and Moor Music festivals in 2008, we played a series of cinema and other screenings across the country in 2009, including performances at Beatherder, Greenbelt and Festinho festivals.

The Last Man on Earth (2010-2011)

The Last Man on Earth is a 1964 post-apocalyptic horror fantasy starring the legendary Vincent Price. (The film was remade in 2007 as 'I am Legend' starring Will Smith). Price stars as scientist Robert Morgan, one man immune to a virus that has killed most of the earth's population and transformed the survivors into vampire-like creatures. In daylight he tours the abandoned city, tracking down and destroying the vampires, returning before nightfall when the dead rise to assault his fortified house. Hope arrives in the form of an apparently normal young woman (Franca Bettoia), but her agenda proves to be more sinister still…

Following a premiere at the Roxy Bar & Screen (London) as part of the Extraordinary Film Season, Animat performed The Last Man on Earth at cinemas and festivals during summer and autumn 2010 and at a series of special screenings to mark the centenary of Vincent Price's birth in May 2011.
The Adventures of Prince Achmed (2011)

In April 2011 we were invited by the Sensoria festival to produce amd perform a live soundtrack to The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) in collaboration with Sheffield-based improvising musicians The Abstract Film Orchestra (harp, piano, cello, guitar and pedal steel).

The first ever full-length animation, Prince Achmed is a beautiful silhouette animation which showcases the extraordinary work of German director Lotte Reiniger. The live score by 'Sheffield's very own soundtracking supergroup' mixes Animat's lush electronic soundscapes with the improvised acoustic approach of AFO with magical results.
